Literature Live
on Location in Leith

NOT TO BE MISSED IN 2006/7

The all-walking literary tour in Leith met with unrivalled approval from the customers and the press. "A great time - I really enjoyed it and learned a lot. Thank you" was typical feed-back. The Irish Times wrote on 1 October 2005: "Bell comes into his own, delivering a passionate and insightful encapsulation of the core of the book…." This year the tour is slightly changed. We meet at the most easily recognised film location (there’s a photo-opportunity for you!). Also it begins in Edinburgh city centre - easier for you to fit in to your busy time here. But it keeps the rawness of the original, and gets to the core of the story in the relic of Leith Central Station where the eponymous word "trainspotting" is uttered. We take a service bus down Leith Walk, seeing the landmark sites that come into the fiction: Montgomery Street, Tommy Younger’s bar, and the rest. Then, walking the streets of Leith, we read passages on location, all introduced and put into context. We end up in the pub that Sick Boy acquires in the sequel to Trainspotting: “Port Sunshine”. If it’s a really bad day Sick Boy himself will be behind the bar, serving with a snarl. But Mary, Queen of Leith is usually there too, keeping things in order. Relax. You’re in Leith. When you have enjoyed the pub and the company, there are lots of buses back to Princes Street from just outside. Pure radge, man.
